Halloween 2020 was an absolute blast! Oh, just remembering it makes me smile wide like a Jack’o’lantern.

The day started with me and my husband decorating the whole apartment. Our guests were going to come later that day, so we had enough time to prepare the typical Halloween things – the Jack’o’lanterns (pumpkin carving), the food, the decorations and our own costumes. We glued little black bats to the windows and mirrors, we hung up orange and black balloons, some “Happy Halloween” signs, skull decorations and many other details, like a spider web all over the TV.

I made quick pancakes for breakfast, which we ate with Rahmkäse cheese (love it!) and some chocolate. Our baby girl was real good that day and hardly made any sound. She was 6 months old back then. I’m sure she felt like she needed to give us some peace and quiet before the big gathering and our friends arriving later.

In the early afternoon our guests started arriving. First was an old friend of mine, who I met years ago at the University when I was still getting my bachelor’s degree. He is the most enthusiastic person in the world when it comes to Halloween. We carved the pumpkins together and I was surprised by how much experience he had doing this. It was my first time carving and I needed the help. My husband also carved a pumpkin and was happy to remember his childhood when carving a pumpkin had nothing to do with Halloween, it was just a bunch of kids having fun in a small town with not much to do around the end of October.

I prepared some food, which was mainly putting potato chips in different bowls ha-ha. Ok, ok, I did use the oven for actual cooking, which was baking some pumpkin pieces with sugar and cinnamon. Oh, just how the house smelled afterwards… like Fall heavens! My best friend Martha also arrived and she brought these creepy, beautiful and absolutely delicious eyeball muffins. We put everything on the table in the living room along with black napkins and other small decorations.

The other guests started arriving and the party began. We were making jokes about each other’s costumes. I was a gypsy fortune teller and I spent a lot of time doing my makeup. The other things in my costume were a couple of scarves I had from my grandmother and a lot of old jewelry. Our little baby girl was dressed as a strawberry and my husband had white paint all over the face, black all over the eyes and a “Game of thrones” t-shirt, because he was one of the undead from our favorite TV series. We took many pictures and had a blast!

I had prepared a couple of games to play. One of them is my typical and favorite Halloween game that I prepare for every Halloween party that I organize – that is the “Kiss, marry, kill” group game. Basically, you see 3 pictures of 3 different celebrities and you have to choose – who to kill, who to kiss and who to marry. I always choose weird or funny celebs to play with, so it is always funny and leading to belly laughter. I had other games prepared too, but we were having such a great time that we forgot to play them.

While eating and laughing with the others, I heard the doorbell several times. It was kids that were trick or treating. It is very uncommon where I live for anyone to be trick or treating, but I guess it is growing more popular with each year. Not all kids had costumes, some were just trying their luck to get candy. Some of them were very bold and said “Don’t worry, if you don’t have candy to give us, you can always give us money”. Nice try! I had bought enough candy for a whole army of kids, ha-ha.
The night ended with everyone happy, bellies hurting of laughter and all of the food eaten. I put the Jack’o’lanterns on the window so if anyone was walking up the street that night, they would see the pumpkins and have a tiny smile.

The party was wonderful and unforgettable and I am such a lucky girl to have so many good friends to spend my Halloweens with!
Can’t wait for next Halloween already!
